Spending time with Trisha and Madison eased Cooperâs mind. Heâd woken from a nightmare and reached out for Sophie but found an empty bed instead. Strange how heâd become accustomed to having her there when theyâd only spent a few nights together. It stood to reason, though, considering he hadnât shared a bed with anyone in years. He didnât understand why sheâd left last night, but hopefully she was open to staying again tonight. After three blissful sleeps with no nightmares, having the bad dreams return had shaken him badly.
After lunch, Cooper flopped onto his couch and dialed Sophieâs number. Heâd need to leave for work soon, because todayâs bride, Emma, would begin to prepare at 2 p.m. for a casual evening wedding, his favorite type. The ceremony would be down by the lake, followed by a buffet dinner at the local pub, The Royal. Usually, heâd see the wedding as a chance to search for a replacement for Gemma, but this time he didnât need to. He had Sophie. Her sexual appetite kept up with his, and her presence staved off his dreams. Today would be strictly work, not pleasure.
âHello,â Sophie answered abruptly.
âWoah, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed,â he teased. âStay with me tonight, and Iâll make sure it doesnât happen again.â The line was cheesy, but he couldnât help himself. She brought it out in him.
âIâm at an open home,â she said shortly. âIâm busy. Can I call you later? Or did you want something in particular?â
âNo. Just to say hi.â
âAll right. Bye, then.â She hung up.
Cooper stared at the phone, bemused. What the hell was that about? Admittedly, chatting on the phone wasnât part of their arrangement, but he thought theyâd more or less tossed out the rule book when she started spending the night with him. He liked talking to her, and he missed hearing her voice and seeing her face, even if heâd theyâd been apart for less than twenty-four hours. Perhaps heâd overstepped; she might not feel the same way.
Now that heâd stopped to consider it, he realized that sheâd been back-pedaling pretty hard since last night. Maybe she was tired of him, even though he hadnât had enough of her yet. His stomach churned nauseatingly, and he rubbed it. God, was she trying to end their fling and he was too dumb to see it? Scowling, he threw the phone at the sofa. If she didnât want to see him anymore, she could damn well tell him to his face.
Cooper fetched the newspaper from his front lawn, shook the dew off and unrolled it on the kitchen table, then scanned the real estate section for open homes. Only two real estate agents worked in Itirangi and they worked for different companies, so it was easy to work out which open home Sophie would be attending. Cooper jotted down the address and grabbed his keys off the hook.
He reached his destination in a few minutes, parked behind Sophieâs silver sedan, and checked his watch.
